My railroad career and our train chasing trip tonight

About a month ago I saw a job posting for NS for a conductor on their website and applied for it. Last night I got the news from them: I wasn't good enough. For shits and giggles I applied for the conductors positions in Portsmouth and Mingo Junction. I never did like NS anyways lol. I went to CSX to check their job listing and found a conductor position for Cincy so I applied. I am also going to apply for the conductor positions available in Marysville.

Tonight was Numbnuts birthday and him and mom came down for dinner. Me Dipshit and Numbnuts set out south towards Cincy to show Numbnuts our usual route for train chasing. We got to the CSX Union Road crossing in Carlisle a little to late as we got stopped in the middle of a northbound CSX autorack. A little bit later Dipshit got sick so we headed home.

June 29, 2010

What a day! Me, my sister (dipshit) and dad (numbnuts) followed the CSX main line from Numbnuts home in Anna to Deshler then followed the CSX to Fostoria where we spent a few hours.

It was an excellent day with 22 trains in about 9 hours. I will list them all below.

9:02 A.M. -We encountered a southbound CSX just north of Piqua, we did not get any information about the train because we were going north on Interstate 75 around 75 MPH while the train was going south at about 50.

9:43 A.M. - We were almost to Anna to get Numbnuts when we saw a long northbound coal train and crossed the tracks. It was parked on the siding north of Sidney and and had all of its lights off. We went to the next cross road and was heading back to cross the tracks at Swanders when Dipshit told me to hurry up because that coal train was starting to move. We got to the tracks just in time because it was booking it at about 50 in about a mile from a complete standstill!!! It was lead by CSX engines 308 and 8746 we knew it was long but not 139 filled coal cars long.

While at Numbnuts house we missed a southbound autorack at 10:25. Just between Anna and Botkins we missed a southbound coal train. I knew I should have crossed the tracks the road before!

11:39 A.M. We saw what tied to be the largest train of the day! It was on the Indiana and Ohio going north we first encountered it at Bible Road in Lima. For those you not familiar with Bible Road it is excellent as it goes right through the I & O yard (about 5 tracks or so) and a little bit up the road crosses the north end of the CSX Lima yard (where we saw that northbound coal again). Anyways back the I & O it was just a single engine, Chicago, Fort Wayne and Eastern 3884. The single engine was about go enter the CSX main and procede to go up to Ottawa to the Ottawa Industrial Park which I & O services. We rain into this train about 5 more times including 11:43 at Bluelick road in the I & O and finally at 12:16 when it just south of Ottawa where the old DT&I breaks off with the CSX and services the Ottawa Industrial Park.

12:50 P.M. We missed a west bound NS that had just come from the Lepsic ethanol plant.

It is hard to believe that the NS would be the last train we would see for almost and hour and a half!!! We drove by the CSX inter-model yard in North Baltimore. Beginning at Hoytville we kept seeing a green light for an east bounder but it never appeared.

2:19 P.M. We finally encounter the eastbounder. Numbnuts had to stop at a cemetery and heard a train so he sent me a Dipshit to go catch it. It stopped just west of town.

2:24 P.M. At the future Fostoria Rail Park we encountered CSX 6353 heading southbound doing yardwork. We would later see this engine enter the NS yard, more on that later.

2:35 P.M. We arrived at the depot and finally found that pesky eastbounder. Lead by CSX 5222 and 8148 it flew past through Fostoria in no time with 122 inter-model.

After that train we went back to get Numbnuts and missed another eastbounder. After grabbing some chow at Arby's we headed back to the good ole depot.

3:09 P.M. The actual largest train of the day came through a 188 car inter-model headed by CSX 5492 and 4705.

3:15 P.M. That pesky CSX 6353 emerged from the N.S. yard with 31 auto racks and a while later it would back them up east of Fostoria before heading north with them.

5 minutes later at 3:20 thanks to my new glasses I was able to identify CSX 9042 and 8883 lead a 91 cars of mixed freight south towards Columbus.

At 3:37 I sent Numbnuts east of the station to catch the south bounder I heard coming. He wasn't able to identify the 2 CSX engines but was able to count the 105 coal cars.

We went to Tiffin for a bit at that point and came back in just enough time to catch some exciting action. We had just came back into Fostoria when we ran into a south bound CSX switching to go east. The 136 car inter-model and auto rack train was headed by CSX 4519 and 8066.

19 Minutes later back at the depot we caught CSX 9000 leading its 38 car mixed freight through town.

At 6:00 we were watching a 92 car mixed freight lead by CSX 7849 and 5234 when we heard a very loud whistle coming from the north east of us. Just east of the depot on the Norfolk Southern track NS 3326 was waiting for the CSX to clear the diamond so it could take 13 cars west towards Lepsic or Findlay.

No sooner had the NS cleared our sight when a 114 car NS Triple Crown Service train flew by lead by NS 9252 and 9762.

After what seemed like an eternity(actually 24 minutes) we finally got another train the NS track was getting active with NS 2588 and 9596 leading 51 mixed cars east.

NS had the two smallest trains of the day we saw if you do not count the engines. At 6:35 we had a 3 whole car grain train heading east lead by NS 3324. R.J. Corman had larger trains when we lived in St. Marys!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

At 6:46 we saw our final NS train of the day as 116 mixed freight cars went west with NS 9410 and 8423 leading the way.

At 7:02 we saw our final train that we were able to count as BNSF engines 727 and 5365 lead 100 cars eastbound on the CSX tracks.

We stuck around 15 more minutes when a west bound CSX switched southbound so we got no engines or number of cars. At that time we were waiting for a north bound CSX train on the "Y" waiting to head west. We never saw that train as we left because it was getting late for us to get back home to Dayton and he still had a red light.

Welcome

Welcome to my blog where I will post about train chasing. After each trip out I will share any trains seen and such. Hopefully Pictures will come too!
